The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country located in the western part of the continent of Africa. The country lies between the latitudes 14 deg and 36 deg N and 5 deg and 17 deg W longitudes. It shares its borders with Algeria, Mali and Senegal. Nouakchott is the capital of Mauritania and also holds the distinction of being the largest city in the country. Arabic is the official language and Ouigaya is the currency of the land. The country is divided into 12 different regions and a district. These are further subdivided to 44 different departments.
