The Republic of Madagascar, earlier known as Malagasy Republic, is a country situated off the southeastern coast of the continent of Africa. It is located between 12 deg S and 26 deg S latitudes and 43 deg and 51 deg E longitudes. It is spread over an area of 587,000 sq kms. Madagascar holds the distinction of being the 4th largest island in the world. Antananarivo is the capital of this island country. French and Malagasy are the official languages. The Malagasy Ariary is the official currency. Christians comprise approximately 45% of the population and about 50% of the people believe in traditional religion.
