The Republic of Burundi is situated in the eastern part of the continent of Africa. Located in the Great Lakes region, it shares it borders with Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is spread over an area of 27834 sq kms. It is divided into 17 provinces for all administrative purposes. Bujumbura is the capital of Burundi. The population of the land is approximately 8,700,000. Kirundi and French are the official languages. The Burundi Franc is the official currency. It enjoys an equatorial type of climate. Christianity is the predominant religion in the country with approximately 62% of the people being Christians. Burundi is known to be rich in copper and cobalt. It is a major exporter of coffee and sugar. Most of the land in the country is used for agricultural purposes.
